Intro to Lock Sport
Tuesday, April 20, 2010 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM (CDT)
This will be an introductory class on Locksport giving you an overview
of common types of locks and then focusing on pin tumbler locks
targeted towards locksport and home ownership.
Pin tumbler are most of the locks you encounter in daily life. I'll cover how they work, what their weaknesses and strengths in security are, how to make some basic lock picks and how to open pin tumbler locks with lock picks.
I'll also touch briefly on some practicalities of home security
related to door locks.
We'll provide supplies for you to make your own picks, practice on a few locks, and with luck send you home with a practice lock and some tools.
No, I won't demonstrate or teach you how to open -insert noun here-
and you won't leave the class able to open any door in 10 seconds like
they do on TV, this is not B&E 101. We are teaching how some nifty little three dimensional puzzles work and that security through obscurity does not equal true security.
Participants are asked to bring any locksport related tools and picks they may have to discuss, and any padlocks or door locks (not the entire door please) that they want to practice on or learn more about. Useful tools for making picks include small metal files, fine grit and finer metal sandpaper, dremel tools, pliers, and small vices. We'll provide as many as we can, so don't worry if you don't have any of that.
Please note, lock picking can cause damage to locks resulting in interoperability. Never pick a lock you don't own, that is in use, or you aren't ok in destroying. This class is about understanding things around us, not disrespecting the rights or property of others. We are not lawyers, and we are certainly not responsible for any tools you may have or your actions, but would remind you to check your local laws regarding locksport devices as there can be a risk in carrying these, sometimes, and in some places. (like florida, or in the commission of another crime)
